If you love avocados or plain avocado toast, check out this honey avocado toast. The honey adds a hint of sweetness, while the red peppers and salt increase the flavor depth. If you've never had honey with your avocado toast, you need to try this!

I've been making this toast for years before avocado toast was even a trend! This is a recipe that I always use when looking for a snack that's filling and satisfying, however, you can eat it for breakfast, brunch, lunch - pretty much whenever!

    Reasons to Love This Recipe

    • This recipe is easy! It takes less than 5 minutes to make and no major cooking skills are involved.
    • The recipe is a good source of healthy fat. The avocados contain healthy fats, which are called monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats.
    • This is kid friendly! My toddler loves this recipe (especially the honey).
    • Have ripe avocados that are about to go bad? Make this avocado toast with honey!
    • This is a tasty variation to your normal avocado toast!

    What You'll Need

    honey avocado toast ingredients

This recipe requires only five ingredients! You most likely have them all on hand.

    • Avocados: select a ripe avocado
    • Bread: any type of bread can be used. I prefer a good quality bread, such as a thick slice of whole wheat bread, 9 grain bread, sour dough or rye bread.
    • Honey: this adds some sweetness. Honey can be substituted with agave nectar
    • Salt and Red Pepper Flakes: both these ingredients are optional, you only need a pinch. Start small and add more as needed.

How to Pick a Good Avocado

It’s important this recipe is made with a ripe avocado. This will make it much easier to mash the avocado and it tastes better because the avocado is creamy!

Here are a few tips to identify a ripe avocado:

    • Color: ripe avocados are typically a dark brown color. A bright green avocado is usually not ripe.
    • Feel: place the avocado in the palm of your hand and squeeze gently. It should be soft, however not overly soft that it feels mushy.
    • Stem: the stem should not have any black, which is a sign of mold.

    Step By Step Instructions

    Toast the Bread

Place the bread in your toaster and toast it until crispy and browned. If you do not have a toast, you can use an oven or skillet.

Oven- place the bread on a cookie sheet in bake in a preheated oven at 350F for 10 minutes. Flip halfway through.

Skillet-butter each side of your bread and place it in a frying pan over medium heat. Check it every couple of minutes until it reaches desired crispness. Flip and allow the other side to cook until crisp.

    Cut and Mash the Avocado

    • Cut the avocado. Remove the pit from the center. Use a spoon to make small slices in the flesh of the avocado, then scoop then scoop the avocado out from the skin. Place half of the avocado on top of the bread.
    • Use a fork to mash it directly on top of the bread (your avocado should be very ripe and mash easily).

    Top with Honey

    • Top with a pinch of salt and a pinch of red pepper flakes.
    • Drizzle the honey on top in a zig zag motion.

    Leftovers

This avo toast is best if eaten immediately because the avocados turn brown easily. If you do have leftovers, place the pit of the avocado in the middle of the mashed avocado toast. This keeps it from turning brown.

You can also sprinkle a few drops of lemon juice or lime juice over the top to help prevent it from browning.

The toast will likely be soggy if eaten as a leftover, so consider heating it in the skillet (bread side facing down) to help restore some of the crispiness.

    Recipe Variations

    • Gluten Free: this recipe can easily be made gluten free by using a GF bread!
    • Extra spice: add some extra spice by adding a sprinkle of red pepper flakes on top of the toast.
    • Fruit: since this is made with honey, try adding a couple thin slices of mango to the top.
    • Avocado slices: if you don’t like mashed avocado, slice it into thin strips and add to the top of the toast.

    Expert Tips

The avocado must be ripe! I cannot emphasize this enough! If your avocado is almost ripe but still not there, peel it and put it in the microwave until hot. This makes it easier to mash, however it will not be as creamy as a ripe avocado.

For a quick and easy version of this toast, use a container of pre-mashed avocado. It's sold in most major retail stores in individual plastic cups. This is convenient so you don't have to worry about finding ripe avocados or taking time to mash the avocados.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Can I use Frozen avocado?

Yes! You can use the frozen avocado cubes found in most grocery stores. Thaw the avocado in the microwave before using it, or it will make the bread soggy.

Do I Have to Mash the Avocado on Top of the Bread?

Nope! I prefer this, however, you can mash it in a separate dish and spread on top of the toast after.

Can I Toast the Bread in the Oven?

Yes, if you don’t have a toaster, you can place the bread on a cookie sheet and bake in a preheated oven at 350 10 minutes, flipping halfway through.

    Ingredients

    • 1 large avocado ripe
    • 2 slices bread
    • 1 tablespoon honey
    • pinch salt
    • pinch red pepper flakes (optional)

    Instructions

    • Toast the bread until crispy.
    • Wash the avocado to remove any dirt. Slice the avocado in half lengthwise.
    • Use a spoon to make small cuts across the avocado, then scrape the avocado out of the skin.
    • Place the avoacdo directly on the toast, and use a fork to mash. Spread evenly over the toast.
Use ½ avocado per slice of bread.
    • Use your fingers to sprinkle with a pinch of salt and red pepper flakes (optional).
    • Drizzle honey in a zig zag motion over the top of the toast. Serve immediatley!

    Notes

    • This recipe makes 2 pieces of avocado toast. Use ½ of a large avocado for each slice. If your avocados are really small, you may need 1 avocado per slice of bread.
    • The avocados must be ripe! Look for an avocado that is brown and soft. It should not be overly mushy or have white spots on it.
    • The red pepper flakes are optional, however, they add some excellent flavor depth!
